on may 31,general joseph e. johnson tried to attack two federal corps south of the chickahominy river. the confetiride troops were no well cordinated, but they drove back the IV corps. both sides kept putting soldiers into the battle.genaral jonson was seriously wounded in the battle, so g.w. smith took over for a while. on june 1, the confederate troops brout more troops and attacked. both, the union and the confeterade clamied victory. the confeterade had 980 troops killed 4739 wounded and 405 captured or missing. the union had 790 killed 3594 wounded and 647 captured or missing. both sides started out with about 40000 troops. this battle was part of the penisula campain. the leader for the union was george b. mcclean.
